SIX THINGS ALL POLITICIANS SHOULD REMEMBER
1. BE A SERVANT
When you have a servant heart, it simply means that you recognize that even if you are in a position of influence and authority, you are simply serving people on a higher level.
You may have good conditions of service around you but do not try abuse those privileges to your own advantage. Always be faithful and keep a record of all that you do.
As a servant, keep people a priority and pay attention to listen to their concerns. This is because they are the ones who empowered you to serve them. When you serve the people with all your heart faithfully, God will protect you from evil people who may try to tarnish your name.
It is true that in your service, it is practically impossible to please everyone but stick to your goal in doing what is right. Set goals and accomplish them. This will give you a sense of satisfaction. A good leader is focused and he sets agenda.
2. YOU WILL NOT REMAIN IN YOUR JOB FOREVER
It is always wise to remember that you are in that position of influence for a period of time. When that time come for you to come out, you will be required to retire or leave office to allow another servant to proceed with the work you left.
Do not make a mistake to try to cling to power because you seem to have good privileges or opportunities that favours you everywhere. Do not be fooled, those things are sweet but they are temporal. To try to maintain your position by using bad methods, or intimidation, will only set your own downfall and your legacy will not be remembered.
It is not wise to try to remain in power when you know that no matter what measures you try to do to maintain yourself in power, there will still come a time when you be required to vacate.
Always bear in mind that your time is limited and it is measured. Great kings ruled and they have long gone. You too, your time will come to an end. This is a reality.
My professor once said, leadership is like a toilet, when you enter a toilet room and found it messed up, you will certainly think it was the last person you just saw who messed it up not knowing he too just found it the way you had found it. The best leader cleans up all the mess so that the next person will found the office clean.
3. CONSIDER YOUR JOB A GREAT PRIVILEGE OF SERVICE
Always consider your job a privilege in your life to do your best. Usually these privileges comes once in a life time. Remember that there are other individuals who are even better than you, but God chose you at this moment and time to serve his people. You are accountable to God and you will be required to give account on everything you are doing.
Aim to do you your best. The mistake you should not make is take your privilege as an opportunity to fatten your self and your family members. When you take this privilege as a source or time to steal, you are making a big mistake that you will live to regret. They will come and grab all that you have and you will remain with nothing. You know that too well. It is pathetic to be treated bad by the same peaple you may use against others today. Tomorrow it will be you.
It is always shameful to return to shabby when at one time you held a big position of influence. To return to begging or die a shameful death it's no good.
All retired men and women in service of politics should be given the respect they deserve. This will depend on your actions you are doing now and today.
4. DO NOT LOOK DOWN OR HUMILIATE POOR PEOPLE
It is unwise of you when you look down on the people you serve because you think you are more important than them. You think you are not their class.
It is not wise for you to look down on people no matter how they appear. Respect them. Treat them with dignity. Come up with trainings that empowers them in entrepreneurship. Lift their lives up. They will live to remember you. Infact, that is the greatest legacy you can ever leave in the hearts of people.
For your information, when you have the tendency to downtrod on the poor people, God in heaven is their defender. When you read the book of Amos, one of the reason Amos proclaimed the message was against rich people who oppressed the poor. God hates it always when the rich takes advantage of the poor. Be careful.
5. BE WHO YOU ARE
Avoid a Spirit of competition. Do not do things to compete with another. Do not do things because you want to impress someone. Do things because you want to leave it better than you found it . No one will fulfill your role. You are special and this will satisfy you because it is you.
God will protect you from jealous people who try to use powers of darkness against you. Put all your confidence in the Creator, God to show you the way.
6. TRAIN YOUR SUCCESSOR
Train someone who may pick your work. Train them to continue where you left. It is not a good idea to completely destroy the work of your predecessor just because you were not in good terms with him or her. Respect those leaders who were before you.
It is always wise to find a way to make them those leaders answerable by the crimes they did while they were in office but certainly not ill treat them.
In my life as a pastor I respect politicians because I know that they too are fellow servants. They are accountable before God our God. In case you did not know where you are in your job of service in the government, you are a servant of God. Be faithful in your job and God will bless you.
To you my fellow servants in politics, aim to serve the people well in so doing, you are serving God.
Avoid bickering, bitterness, hatred strife against each other. When you do this, people watch and they judge. It is my advice to all politicians that leave a good legacy that people will remember you with. The job of politics is not forever. It has time limit.
Stay well.
